Scrambling Beginners

Overview

The Lake District’s famous ridges make for an epic day out. Getting to the tops of our high mountain crags can be straightforward, following the main tourist paths – but if you are looking for something more challenging, this course is ideal.

The Lake District has some of the finest scrambling and mountaineering in Britain, for all levels of experience and ability. Scrambling is a progression from hill walking, tackling steeper, more challenging terrain.

Scrambles in the UK are usually graded from 1 to 3. Our Introduction Course takes you on easier Grade I scrambles. All scrambling grades require a degree of rock climbing as both hands and feet are employed, but a classic grade 1 scramble is essentially an exposed walking route.

Some of the best routes in this category are classic scrambles like Striding Edge or Jake’s Rake, which are perfect places to start if you are making your first forays into scrambling territory. The narrow and exposed ridges offers all the pleasures of an airy classic scramble, with stunning views across the valleys and lakes of the Lake District, without being too technical.

Many people are caught out on the presumably easy Grade I scrambles of the lakes, as routes can be wet and slippery with polished holds. Our introductory course aims to help you assess the risks of each route, and make you confident in moving across this vertical terrain.

Our Guides will tailor the course around your fitness, experience and your aspirations.

The Course teaches you:

  • Clothing and equipment
  • Basic scrambling techniques
  • Movement Skills
  • Assessing risk and route choice
  • Hazard management
  • Assisting and safeguarding other party members
  • Simple rope-work for scrambles
  • Guidebooks and grading systems

Helmets and other equipment are provided by us.
